Job Summary

Position responsible for serving in a leadership role and as a clinical expert in the delivery and management of comprehensive patient care, utilizing research and evidence-based practice as necessary; for expertly caring for patients from multiple services/specialties, and for more complex diagnosis. Responsible for appropriate oversight/supervision of assigned personnel and performing direct patient care in a cost-effective manner. Assesses patients, develops and initiates treatment plan based on the results of the evaluation. Provides direct patient care. Documents findings, progress and instruction to patients and caregivers. Serves as a resource and mentor for the staff, students and volunteers while assisting in setting up educational programs, providing input for program development, and serving as a resource for community education and marketing.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelors or Graduate degree from an accredited university-based therapy program; Occupational Therapy; Physical Therapy or Speech Pathology

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current license to practice Physical Therapy by Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners or by the Physical Therapy Compact Commission, or

  • Current Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners license or 

  • Current license to practice Speech/Language Pathology by the State Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology for Texas and Current certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Current Certification in Basic Life Support.

  • Current Certification in Basic Life Support.

A physical therapist practicing direct access:

Education: Doctoral degree along with a residency or fellowship program, or 

Licensed therapist with 30 hours of continuing competence activities in differential diagnosis

Licenses/Certifications: Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners license.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • At least five (5) years’ of clinical experience required with demonstrated leadership acumen.

  • The position requires occasional/frequent lifting up to 75-100 pounds and carrying of up to 30 pounds; prolonged standing; frequent walking, stooping and squatting.

  • Fine hand dexterity, eye-hand coordination, the ability to receive oral and written communication, and to communicate verbally and in writing are also necessary.

  • The visual ability to monitor instruments, computers and equipment, recognize alphanumeric characters, distinguish colors and observe physical characteristics are essential to this position.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Assumes responsibility in the care of the patient. Performs complete, comprehensive evaluation of patients. Accurately interprets evaluation findings. Completes a written plan of care, develops goals based on evaluation findings, and develops a comprehensive program to attain goals. 

  • Implements a therapy treatment program and provides advanced therapy treatments.  Demonstrates competency in performing advanced therapy skills. Assesses patients periodically to monitor progress towards treatment goals, and alters goals, plan or program as indicated for assessment. Motivates and instructs patient/caregiver using appropriate methods.

  • Communicates effectively with staff, patients/caregivers and professional colleagues to include physicians and insurance companies. 

  • Manages time effectively. 

  • Documents appropriately in the medical record and completes other documentation duties accurately and efficiently. 

  • Serves as clinical resource and mentor to develop staff.

  • Acts as clinical instructor to therapy students.

  • Clinical supervision of staff with a professional open environment and takes an active role in ensuring safe and effective performance  

  • Performs assigned administrative duties in the absence of manager and/or director.

  • Assist manager/director with new employee on-boarding and orientation. Assists in completing new hire paperwork in a timely manner.  

  • Actively participates in organized community service/functions as a representative of the profession.

  • Attend and participate in designated committees, focus groups, and staff meetings in conjunction with the Rehab Manager and/ or Director. 

  • Identifies need for new departmental programs, or for revision of existing ones in response to the changing health environment. Conceptualizes, designs and implements new or revised programs. 

  • Serve on designated committees to advance quality of therapy service.

  • Assists with departmental planning including departmental strategic plans, budgets, goals, policies, procedures, standards of care and marketing.

  • Coordinates the day-to-day operations of assigned area to ensure safe care to patients while adhering to policies, procedures and standards, within budgetary specifications. 

  • Demonstrates good skills in time management, supply management, productivity and accuracy of practice.

  • Coordinates staffing and schedules to ensure optimal department performance within budgetary and productivity specifications.

  • Assists with updating and maintenance of personnel files.

  • Demonstrates competence to provide treatment in all areas of the department which may include inpatient, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation.

  • Assists Manager and / or director with coordinating and conducting candidate interviews and provides feedback on candidate selection.

  • Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, university settings and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
