Job Summary

Review clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-9-CM /CPT codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance. Accurately code conditions and procedures as documented in the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

Job Description

The Outpatient Certified Coder will be responsible for coding for all Memorial Hermann outpatient facilities. Interested candidates must live in Texas, Louisiana or Oklahoma to be considered for this position.

Desired Skill Sets:

  • Must be certified to be considered: CCS, CPC, RHIT or RHIA
  • Outpatient coding experience preferred

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  High School Diploma or GED required

Licenses/Certifications:  Prefer outpatient coding experience with CPC-H, CCS, or CCA coding credential

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Ability to use a personal computer for input, evaluation and optimization of diagnostic/procedural information
  • Ability to code ER and diagnostic outpatient records across a multi-facility system

Principal Accountabilities

  • Assigns codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures according to the appropriate classification system for outpatient encounters.
  • Utilizes technical coding principals and APC reimbursement expertise to assign appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnoses and CPT 4 procedures.
  • Reviews documentation to extract and enter data accurately for other abstracting fields.
  • Follow coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures affecting the coding process.
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and adheres to official coding guidelines.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service. 
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
